Gautrain is a good option to expand your hotel opportunity set.
Definitely forget about walking anywhere from the Saxon. Consider staying at the Michelangelo (stone's throw from Gautrain) or the InterContinental (two stone's throw). Both have pools (latter outdoor on the roof), and you can walk to the Sandton malls with plenty of dining choices without even having to step outside.

Marilyn stayed at the Intercontinental twice around a month ago.... the night before her flight out to Victoria Falls and the night she returned before her train to Cape Town.
While she was flying.... I reached out to the IC hotel via their website asking about the easiest way for her to get to the property. I also indicated it was her birthday so would appreciate if she could get an east facing room as she loves to wake up to the sun.
They responded a few hours later indicating that they would have someone meet her personally at the airport and escort her to the hotel at no charge. In addition, they provided a birthday dessert that so surprised her. They also helped her with internet connection problems on her iPad. On her return, they met her again... and helped wrapped some artwork she had purchased in Victoria Falls.
She was so impressed as would I. I highly recommend the Intercontinental Hotel and the staff.

One other thing in the IC's favor is that you can purchase elite Ambassador status that gets you an upgrade, free movie, newspaper, etc and a free night certificate for future use at any other Intercontinental.

Wow, what super, caring service!! Thanks for sharing that information.
I really like this IC. On one of my visits the mini bar door was stuck. They immediately sent someone up to look at it but asked what they could get me in the meantime. I only wanted glass of wine which they provided - and comped it.
Only later did I recognise (from their web site) that the lovely woman who accompanied the maintenance man was the GM! It is obvious that her attitude sets the tone for the whole operation.

Another alternative, depending on her wants/likes:
Gautrain runs from the airport to Sandton, and the Radisson Blu Gautrain is right across the street. Not sure if she's the type that wants to go out, be a bit social, but it's only 20 minutes from the airport and a very nice property.

The Protea near the airport is supposed to be quite nice. One benefit is that it's has a Gauiltrain bus stop from Rhodesfield making it an easy ride down to Rosebank/Sandton/Park

airport near JNB suggestions
Looks like we might need to overnight on arrival and or on departure and be near the airport to catch a flight the next morning. Does anybody have suggestions near the airport.
If you say Hyatt please provide reasons.
Thanks!

I like it, because it's an easy Gautrain ride from the airport (and then a very short and safe walk) and you can get into the Firs for some decent dinner options. Use C&P to make it cheap (only level 2 so 4k points & $55).

Because of Gautrain, unless your morning flight is really early, I'd say any of the hotels in Sandton are fair game. I like the Hilton myself because of status, but others are just as good. In Sandton you have Nelson Mandela Plaza for dinner.
