IMO booking on Y is not worth it because A3 charges almost the same YQ. Try to use it in carrier without YQ if you are redeeming it for Y.

For availability in *A, you can also use UA's website to check for availability in Saver Level, and you do not need an account. However, base on research I find that A3 have less savers award compare to Aeroplan search engine.

I just checked om UA there is availability on Feb 23, Feb 25 on Y from IST-ADD-CPT

I did not connect via Europe; I flew from Europe, where Greece is still located since there was no Grexit (yet?) to Mexico and then had three individual return trips, two of which ex PTY "nested" in the one ex MEX to/from PTY. Altogether, four separate award tickets (three through M+B - Copa and Avianca; one through M&M - LH) and one paid domestic with A3, all times two (wife).

I see, that is indeed a complex itinerary. I am glad you were able to get an agent that helped you. I hope the YQ didn't cost too much

For the LH flights in J €448.45 each (i.e. really a lot!). The central American ones were also expensive (between €100 and €150 each, in coach and business respectively), there was no YQ but other taxes (PA, FZ, XT). Plus, of course, booking fees.

This is going to be my first redemption. I had very little knowledge of the redeem. As I understand from this "Try to use it in carrier without YQ" I can call another airline in *A (that doesn't charge YQ) to redeem my A3 miles?
Can I do that ??

No, your miles are with A3 and you must redeem through A3. Some airlines, typically those from North America, charge lower YQ than European ones. You need to research the total costs of the redemption to see what's cheapest where you can find availability.

Ohhhhh I got it ^. I went to Matrix and I found out that TK doesn't charge YQ for this route, is this some kind of error? or it will come later when we book by call center ? or do they called YR for TK?

just found out YR and YQ are the same. In this case I need to pay around $128 Don't know if this is the cheapest or there's cheaper YQ than this.

Fairly shorthaul economy redemption? Honestly, it's not worth it - in most cases (other than very last minute bookings when the price is high, or on very specific high revenue routes), pay cash.

Miles should usually only be redeemed for long-haul Business Class or higher, because then the fare is much more than the taxes and the value is much better.

There are some exceptions, such as BA's Reward Flight Saver, but such a thing doesn't exist in A3.

All the *A carrier that I have search always charge YQ/YR on their award ticket, for at least 100 Euros plus the 20 Euro redemption fee. If your ticket price is 300 Euro one-way for IST-CPT, then you are getting about 0.495 cents USD per mile. Which is not so good IMO.

Here is the calculation in case you are wondering:

Rate of Ticket =Exchange Rate * [(Ticket Price - YQ+Fee)/# of miles]

= 1.1 USD/1 Euro * [ (300 - 100 + 20)Euro/40,000 miles]

= 1.1 USD/1 Euro* 0.0045 Euro/mile

= 0.00495 USD/mile

So to maximize your Rate, you will either have to redeem for a ticket with a higher cash price (e.g Business class, First class ticket or last-minute Y ticket), or redeem it with a no-YQ airline. You can check below for the no-YQ airlines and cities.

Yes, I should know this because I posted it

"For no-YQ airlines you can choose the following:

AC&UA (within America and TATL flights), CM, AV, O6

or travel from no-YQ cities/country:

HKG, Brazil and Philippines.

I believe Japan also has a cap on YQ."

Wow!! 448.45?! I hope you had a good experience in LH J!

Well, an intra-Asian open-jaw economy redemption turned out very useful for me at least (apart from the hassle to actually get it booked). The charge for an equally fitting and comfortable itinerary (non-stop flight outbound, and one connection inbound, both daytime flights that corresponded well to my other connections) on a paid ticket was about 400% more expensive, and that price did not even include the possibility for an open-jaw itinerary. I would have had to go back to the city I arrived the destination country into, to get back for the given price.

Granted, this was for a fairly long route, one of the longest intra-Asian ones actually, so your main point is valid nonetheless.

Thank youuu I am flying out from IST so there aren't really a lot of choice. YQ for LH is even expensive and MS too.
