A significant change at FCO will take place in a few days, that is expected to cause quite a bit of confusion for those who are already familiar with the airport.

To paraphrase and summarize the article, Fiumicino is changing the names of the gates because of the new Terminal 3 wing.

FCO has expanded. Unless there are last minute changes in plans, before the end of the year there will be a new departure wing for extra Schengen flights from Terminal 3. They completed construction of a vast, 90,000 square meter structure with 14 new gates (E11 to E24) that will be able to accommodate 6,000,000 passengers per year. To simplify the operation, which will be delicate because it will happen during the intensely busy Christmas season, they are changing the names of the gates on the first of December.

Today they announced that starting December 1, departure areas G through H will be called Departure area E. They suggest that passengers get their boarding pass as soon as they arrive to the airport, and then request information from airport staff.

Airport management said that during the night of November 30 through December 1st they will remove signs with the letters G and H gates and replace them with signs that say E gates. This is in anticipation that the new departure area for extra Schengen flights will be operational by the end of December.

Starting today and during the entire transition period there will be informational videos shown on monitors at every check-in counter, at every departure gate that has monitors, at the desk for people making a transfer, and at security checkpoints.
