I think I'm going to go ahead and book the Y fares and take my chances w/ the upgrade. The flight is actually for New Years Day so I'm not sure if that helps/hurts my chances.
I will take the advice to book it all on one itinerary and call in to explain to upgrade situation. Also I would prefer that they take the miles away from my kid's accounts rather than me or my wife's.
