So something very strange happened with this itinerary. When the charge hit my card - the $1,008.10 turned out to be in USD.
After some arguing I was able to cancel it without fee and did a fresh booking for the following less agonizing routing:

I modified this booking as follows:
Instead of doing FRA-ORD-YYZ on UA, I switched to FRA-MUC-YUL-YYZ with MUC-YUL in LH F (other two in Y) for travel today.
Had to cough up another $98 in YQ and taxes plus the change fee. Much less damage than I expected switching from UA F to LH F (it seems pretty consistent that AP is doing YQ recalculation even on tickets that have already had segments flown.)
