Rangalifinolhu Island (main island)
The villas numbers start from the south/bottom and move north/up. As such, the villa numbers are highest at the northernmost/top parts of the island.

The exception is the RWVs (called 'Spa Villas' on the 'Old Map' in the Wiki and situated off the nothern tip of the island) where they start on the right hand side (#401) and then alternate east-west/right-left so that all the odd numbers are on the eastern/sunrise side and the even numbers are on the western/sunset side. 421 is regarded as the best villa in this group as it's right at the end and by far the most private.

Rangali Island (small/water-villa island)
Villa numbers start from the southernmost villa on the eastern/sunrise side (which is about 2/3 the way up the right hand side of the island) and go in an anticlockwise direction right around the tip and back down the western/sunset side.

Note: The numbering system does not include the SunWVs(Sunset Water Villas) as they were built after the others. 349 is the southernmost/bottom and 350 is the northernmost/top. Again, 350 has the best views and is the most prvate.

To answer your question, 342 is closest to the DWVs.
