Our 20th meal - Benin - was our first foray into the cuisine of West Africa, and proved to be difficult to track down. While searching for true Beninese food, I visited the country's permanent UN mission, attempted to contact a Beninese-American cultural organization, and on a ride home from LGA asked a Guinean cab driver to call his Beninese friend, all to no avail.
Armed with a good understanding on what one might find on a Beninese dinner table, we decided to try our luck with a West African restaurant -
Meytex Cafe - on Flatbush Avenue. This is definitely a Ghanian establishment, as evidenced by the flag on the canopy and paraphernalia covering the walls, so I made sure to explain our project to the woman behind the counter. She then called her coworkers out from the kitchen and they worked to put together a custom Beninese meal.
