Oh, and recent experience in Europe using C&S cards:
30+ in-person transactions. A few surprised looks when a receipt spit out. One hunt for a pen that took > 10s. Otherwise no problems.
Multiple unattended kiosk purchases (including HEX, Oyster, SPT machines; did not try gas stations/toll booths in France). Only problem I had was at a Tesco Express. The transaction actually hard hung the register
Manager had to reboot it & said it had been seen before with US cards. He insisted that the transaction was processed, but it didn't appear on my account.
Summary: C&S works great, don't stress about looking for a C&P card.
