I liked the area around the hotel as you could find nice streetfood and if you want good Japanese food this is also the place to be.
Kalboz - thanks for the info on your flikr on the massage place close to the hotel, it was value for money despite the condition of the interior, the most important was the massage itself which was nice and relaxing.
Sadly during my stay (maybe it was because I was using the 50% voucher) was not upgraded and did not get the privilege for making an exception for the 2nd room guest for lounge access. I had to pay extra for the access.
But yes the evening offerings were normally very good, first time that I have seen a cook present to make the warm dishes to your request.
The Skybar at the top of the hotel is a great addition (during Songkran - they made an exception to the dress code- which I think should be kept always that shorts are possible as long as the person is decently dressed).

btw: for me, the crossing at the main junction to the BST was not too bad ( maybe because it was Songkran so less traffic), but I thought it was doable even with luggage.

Cheers!
Sorry to hear that you did not get any upgrades, maybe they were fully booked.

True enough, the area around Marriott Sukhumvit 57 is authentically Thai and we enjoy it immensely. And if you been to the tourist sights already and tired of the trendy places, this is the area where to stay and enjoy Bangkok. Close to Thong Lo BTS station to get you anywhere to chose to go.

There is a food/vegetable market in the morning right that starts at 6 AM at Sukhumvit 57 stretching into Sukhumvit proper. If you go out early enough, you will see the monks collecting their daily rations. The street food is fresh, delicious, and cheap. When my mother in law stays with us, this is where we get her breakfast from. On the same Soi and right across from the property, there is a row of several authentic Japanese eateries. On the opposite side of Sukhumvit, by the BTS station, there is the famous Sukhumvit 38 night market that stays open until 3 AM. 2-minutes walk and you are right in one the best places to have delicious Thai street dinner.

The massage place, Pornchanok Massage, where I get my foot massages is basic enough and does the job. You can't go wrong with $5/hour foot massage. One FT friend ran out of this place complaining that it was too rudimentary Avoid "Asia Herb Association" on Thong Lo! Their masseuses are lazy and don't follow the information sheet they have you complete upon check in. When I asked politely that she follow the instructions for firm massage, the masseuse replied that she did not have any power!!!
