I think that your plan is a good one. I would get either the United Explorer or Sapphire Preferred card first, meet the spend requirements on that card, and then apply for the other card, two or three months later. I'm no expert on applying for Chase cards, but I think spacing the applications out will minimize the chances of a rejection, and since you're going to need some time anyway to meet the spend requirement, why take a chance by submitting two applications at the same time?
