If you speak to BA on the phone are they able to book you into the correct A class?
Yes, if BA book you on the AA metal for US Domestics using the AA code they can get you in A class.
If so is there any benefit in doing this over just booking on AA.com?
Booking via AA.com books you in the AA codeshares on BA metal, though, doesn't it? This loses Avios according to this post by Prospero:

So are we wanting TATL flights to be booked on BA numbers/codeshares but domestic US on AA numbers to maximise TPs?
That's basically it. Apparently neither BA.com nor AA.com will do this by default!
