While I certainly wouldst go out of my way to earn it and certainly wouldn't spend more than I was going to anyway, it does have a couple of handy benefits like Club check in and more importantly choice of seat 7 days out.
Seat selection is useful - but Club Check in isnt really a benefit in reality (The queue there is often just as long)
This may be true at T5 LHR but at outstations club checkin makes a huge difference.
