I'm sure the MH counters will open at least 3 hours before departure for check-in. I've read somewhere that some passengers have been able to check in 4 or even 5 hours before. Online check-in is not available at LAX, I believe, so you don't even have to think about bag drop-off. You definitely will be able to check-in for connections beyond KUL if travelling on MH.
