Personally, I'd stop at Newport, RI if your schedule allows. Providence is also a great place to stop several good restaurants there as well.
The thing with Newport is that it gets unpleasantly crowded on Summer weekends. If you are stopping off season or on a (non-holiday) weekday, then it is a great option.
