I have to fly RJs a lot from my smallish airport so I feel your pain, but you're going to have a hard time finding a decent sized rolling bag that will fit. Some gate agents will automatically make you check any rolling bag even if it will fit.
Unfortunately you may have to to deal with gate checking or get a soft shoulder bag (I know you said you don't want to go that route),
