Are Canadian prepaid gsm plans best for US travel?

Both AT&T and T-Mobile prepaid sims expire very quickly (after 60 days). Once they expire, the sim is bricked permanently, and cannot be reactivated (so periodic travelers to the US have no way of reactivating and topping up prior to departure).

I see that the Canadian 7-11 speakout gsm plans last 365 days, even when only $25 is loaded, and long-distance calls to the US are reasonable (20 cents/min). It's ironic that the best deal for infrequent US travelers is a Canadian sim chip. Am I missing something?
