I can definitely understand the policy to not allow refrigeration/microwaving of food (it'd never end!) as well as retrictions of alcohol but for the rest, to me it's just a tactic to make people buy on board.
I prefer seeing FI passengers boarding with a lunch bag than pax forced to buy expensive rubber-flavoured sandwiches.
