Part 15 SIN - LHR

The Photos

Here we are at the last instalment of this flying visit to Australia.

I awoke before my alarm and had a quick shower before checking out of my room at the Changi Crowne Plaza hotel.

I already had my BP with me so I headed straight for an emigrations queue where I was processed quickly. The Crowne Plaza is at T3 at Changi which meant no terminal hop was needed and after orienting myself I made a beeline for the SQ Lounge complex.

Once inside the agent at the door noticed my Private Room stamp and began to escort me down there. She asked if I had been here before and I replied not to the private rooms. She asked if I had got the boarding pass here in SIN I said no it was printed in Melbourne. She said the private room stamp is still wet! I had noticed that too the stamp the agent used in MEL was extremely wet and refused to dry. I was still able to easily smudge the ink 17 hours later.
Once inside my escort announced me to the agent there who ticket my name off her list. The escort then showed me around the lounge and explained where everything was. She then called over one of the staff to take a drink order for me and wished me a pleasant flight.

I decided to go to the dining room first to grab a bite to eat as I had not consumed any food since the second meal on the plane the evening before. I took a photo of the menu so you can see what was on offer to order. They also had some congee and noodles ready prepared in those usual flip top chafing dishes. There was also a toaster and breads, fruit, yoghurt, cold meats and cheeses that were all self-serve.

I asked for a plate of scrambled eggs, chicken sausage, tomato, mushrooms and potato cake. I also requested grapefruit juice but they didn’t have any so I opted for tomato instead. The food was freshly prepared and very tasty and the eggs weren’t too dried out. The dining room was very dimly lit so the photos inside aren’t exactly brilliant, excuse the pun.

After the meal I asked for a cappuccino that was brought out soon after. I then retired to the seats outside and the general lounge area to wait out my flight. I was able to whip out my laptop and use the wi-fi in the lounge to catch up with a few emails and FT of course.

At around 08:20 I made ready to leave and the lounge agent remembered my name and crossed it off here list to let them know I had left the lounge. She confirmed my gate and said it was quite a walk away. She then escorted me to the front of the lounge complex whilst chatting about various things including my very mild Aussie accent.

She wished me a pleasant flight at the entrance to the lounge complex and I wandered on down to the main terminal. After a very long walk to the last of the B gates I made my way up to the x-ray machines where I removed my laptop and baggie and went on through the arch. No problems with beeping and I collected my things again. The SIN officials checked my BP and passport and let me on into the gate area where my BP was scanned.

Boarding had already commenced and I was able to walk to the end of the lounge and straight on board the aircraft.

Flight SQ308 SIN-LHR Seat 2A
Aircraft: 77W
Departure time: 09:05

I was escorted to my seat and was offered a newspaper, magazines, amenity and kit and PJs were offered. Yes Extra Large please. (These were still too small BTW) I was asked if I would like something to drink. Well people prepared to be shocked. I asked for sparkling water. I know I know I have blown reputation right out of the water and I shall forever more hang my head in shame.

I sat and supped my Perrier whilst the boarding continued. The crew member told me the flight time would be 13 hours and 25 minutes. A hot towel was brought around on the ground. By the time we closed up and pushed back at 09:03 there were 5 of us in the F cabin.

We took off at 09:19 and turned around to give me a good glimpse of Changi airport below me. After the chime the crew were around again with a hot towel and a post take off drink. Wait for it… Yes I ordered another Perrier.

After all the excesses of the last week it was time for a bit of a break I felt.
The menus were handed out for the flight and shortly after I was asked what I would like.

I opted to skip most of the breakfast delights as I had eaten in the lounge, but I did decide to go local and try the nasi lemak. This was presented to me along with I am ashamed to say, more Perrier. Oh will I ever live this flight down?

After the meal I watched some more episodes of Mad Men on the IFE, read my book or listened to music and watched the world go by.
I had a brief snooze but did not set the seat into bed mode, it was a day flight after all and I would arrive in London during the afternoon.

Somehow the flight went by as I watched the ‘stan’ countries move beneath us. There were some great sights to be had as we ventured out of

I was also asked if I would like a drink to start with. Well Mr Moomba was back on form by this stage and yep, you guessed it ‘Krug please’.
My glass was delivered and the bottle presented before being poured in true SQ style.
Another hot towel was delivered to my seat.

The satay appeared next along with a top up of the Krug. Now the satay eating is an art when they don’t give you any utensils to go along with it. Dipping the meat into the sauce dish to get sufficient amounts of the sublime sauce is quite difficult when the meat is on skewers. I managed to do so without ending up covered in peanut sauce and the wet wipe delivered with this course was not required.

After the satay was cleared away and my glass refreshed the table was set for lunch.
I started with the Asian appetiser course instead of the caviar as it is become so boring these days.

It is nice to try different things occasionally and this was quite a surprise with the different tastes and textures tantalising my palate. More Krug was enjoyed with this course and some bread was offered. I, despite the above statement, went for some garlic bread. Well some things just have to be.

Next up was another new sensation of tastes and textures in the form of the soup. Apart from the couple in the jelly in the appetiser I don’t believe I have ever eaten wolfberries before. Not a lot of favour but quite interesting in texture. The bamboo pith was another texture revelation. More Krug please.

The salad was along next with its quite interesting mix of cranberry, pistachio and asparagus. It was quite delicious and was probably my preferred course of the meal.

For the main I went with the lamb and was a little disappointed although it was still nice it was nothing special.

I switched to the Shiraz wine to go with the course and the subsequent cheese course that was up next.

The meal was cleared away and another hot towel was delivered to my seat.
The IFE was showing signs of stress and tried to tell me we had 14 minutes to go when we were still flying over eastern Germany.

I changed back into my civilian attire after the meal and sat down to wait out the remainder of the flight. I was offered another drink before landing and I went back to my bottle of Krug. I asked the crew member what the preference was and she said most people went with Dom. She suspected because it has the name that people know. She said she also preferred the Krug.

Before landing another hot towel was delivered and my glass topped up with the remains of the bottle of Krug.

I was able to grab a couple of nice shots of South London on our approach before we landed at 15:32.

I was quickly off the plane after thanking the great crew and made my way to immigrations. IRIS was happy again today and I was down in the baggage hall within 10 minutes of pulling up to the gate.

The bags started to emerge around 5 minutes later and my bag was out a few minutes later. I went through customs and down to the HEX platform where a train was due in 8 minutes.

Around 30 minutes later after the HEX ride and a cab I was walking in my door after yet another adventure in the pointy end of aircraft.

Now many of you will want me to do the compare and contrast with the SQ and QF A380 products.

The QF seat, despite it being broken on the first leg, has more nice features, like angling towards the window, a massage function etc although the SQ seat is more sumptuous bedecked in leather. The SQ seat is more leather and wood whilst the QF seat is material and plastic. I didn’t really mind the QF seat décor though. The SQ bed was quite firm and I wouldn’t say I would get a better sleep in that than in the QF seat.

Both seats suffer from being too far away from the window to gaze down and out rather than just out. For a ‘stare out the window traveller’ such as I this was a problem with both.
Both A380 were very quiet which made for a really pleasant trip. SQ offer proper BOSE noise cancelling headphones (on 380 only) whilst QF were not BOSE. (Not sure what they were).

I am not sure I was overly fussed with the privacy screen idea on the SQ seat and the QF seat did offer a very high degree of privacy.

IFE is about equal on both although the SQ screen is bigger, but QF won with the great tail cam view.

I think I will always prefer the QF style of service over the more formal approach from the SQ crew. They are very efficient and proactive but I find then a little too stiff and they are less able to react to individual passenger’s preference of interaction. The CX crew seem to be best at this skill.

I have always, in the past liked the SQ meal offerings and don’t usually book the cook because I can always find something to tempt on the menu. Unfortunately this was not the case this time. I found the menus less than exciting and was struggling to choose what to eat.
In contrast, and seemingly the norm for me, the QF menus were a playground to be explored and I had a tough time choosing which options to go with.
Perhaps this is a result of my Anglo heritage though. I did think the SQ meals were not as tasty and well presented as the QF ones though.

One final word on these flights must be said about the 77W F seat on SQ. I really don’t like the seat for long haul, it is too wide and the seat adjustment is limited. I could not find a comfortable position to sit it whilst watching movies as the foot rest section just doesn’t seem to want to go where I need it to be.

Overall I think I preferred the QF experience but wouldn’t say no to flying on SQ again in the pointy end of any of their aircraft.

Next up my return to Oz and final portions of this RTW. But you will have to wait until 2010 for that one.
