Why not still have the awards, just without all the pomp and splendour. People vote, there is a deadline, and the awards are announced. These are the most credible ones out there and it seems such a shame to throw it all away.
This makes a lot of sense to me and would likely preserve 80% of the value for 20% of the effort.
