This can be especially irksome on a trip involving several hotels and car hire.
Even on prepaid rates, hotels block some credit - sometimes only £0.01 or $1 - which should be cancelled on checkout, though it can take several days to take effect. The result can be a decline on subsequent transactions elsewhere, though that's not happened to me.
Because of this, I normally use my AmEx platinum card (theoretically no limit but ...) to secure the reservation and use another card to pay.
