Perhaps grab a hire car and drive yourself north of Cairns to Port Douglas for a look around. A good part of the drive is through world heritage rainforest right by the ocean side. You can stop off on a near deserted beach, call in at the Hartleys Creek Zoo (a small zoo with many Australian animals), talk a walk around the main street of port Douglas (Macrossan St), drive up to the look out (top of hill) at Port Douglas, and refresh at any one of the many bars, cafes, restaurants in Port Douglas.
About one hour drive each way.
Closer to downtown Cairns:
- walk around the Botanic Gardens
- take a river cruise up river to look for crocodiles etc
- have a beer in the Cairns RSL (serviceman's club - right by the Holiday Inn) to look at the historical military photos of local WW2 ops
- take the express bus (1X) from the Lake St terminus to Palm Cove (40 min ride) and have a leisurely lunch at one of the top restaurants by the beach (Nu Nus or Vivos)
