I (also Adelaide-based) have found CX quite helpful when phoning up to get seat allocations (but I have OneWorld status). If your fare class allows seat assignment, certainly phone and get whatever you can now (it will be a fair way back if non-status) then try to improve it later on (knowing that you have a reasonable fall-back).
As for suggestions, my invariable preference is forwards - my view is that the further forward you are, the less movement there is.
