I've only personally done it when I was flying the hub carrier either in or out of the hub in which I wanted to stop over. However, I'm under the same impression you are, that it's not a requirement. I suggest contacting
vysean, he's done a bunch of these tickets, knows the rules well and probably knows the answer.
