Video of “Ghost Passengers” On Phuket Flight Goes Viral

Everything seems perfectly ordinary in the video of weary passengers disembarking a flight at a lonely Thailand airport, that is, until viewers realize that there isn’t a plane at the end of the jetway.

It’s been said that the camera never lies – it just tells a story. In the case of a viral video that seems to show ghostly air travelers arriving at Phuket International Airport (HKT) from thin air, however, an optical illusion seems to be helping the camera to tell a tall tale. The footage, which has been viewed tens of thousands of times on social media, captures what appears to be dozens of passengers eerily streaming off of a flight and moving up a jetway on their way to the terminal -only there is no sign of an aircraft at the end of the jetway and on closer inspection, the specter-like passengers have an enigmatic other-worldly quality about them.

In the comment sections of the dozens and dozens of online postings of the surreal footage, some viewers posit that the shimmering figures are the passengers of a plane crash, who are finally returning home. More cynical viewers insist that the footage was somehow manipulated to create a paranormal hoax. A brief study of the footage, however, makes both of those theories feel unlikely.

A closer look at the video makes it clear that the ghostly images are, in fact, reflected images on the glass windows of the gangway. This (thankfully) accounts for both the shimmering unearthliness of the passengers and the impossibility of the travelers arriving on the jetway without a plane anywhere in sight.

The UK tabloid newspaper, The Suntraced the spooky video to a Bangkok Airways Captain Voravit Vejjajiva who says he captured the brief clip from the cockpit of a nearby plane. Don’t look to the aviator for answers, however; if the pilot knows the secret behind the hair-raising images, he certainly isn’t telling.
