United: Sorry We Left Your Mom Stranded in a Wheelchair for 12 Hours

United Airlines has issued an apology after apparently leaving a 77-year-old flyer in a wheelchair stranded at the gate at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) for twelve hours without assistance. The flyer’s son, Steven Williams, had dropped his mother off at the airport trusting that personnel would assist her in getting to her destination.

“I got a text at 4:30 in the morning saying she hadn’t arrived. I called the airline to make sure she was on the flight and they reassured me three or four times she was on that flight,” said Williams.

United has since issued an apology for the incident and offered the family a flight voucher.

If you read the original article, it sounds like the family expected unaccompanied minor service for her, which is not what wheelchair service is.

A flight voucher? So they can take a chance it might happen again? Pitiful. When my husband was dying his 82-year old brother wanted to come from CA to KC to see him one last time. Brother has emphysema, can walk only short distances and is not a confident traveler. The only way we would have done it was to pay someone to accompany him both ways- we didn't trust the airlines to take care of him. Sadly, that was out of the question.

United Airlines has lost all touch with reality. The use of Airline Vouchers should be banned, Cash Money or Certified Funds only!
