Beginning August 30, United Airlines will enter into a codeshare agreement with Ethiopian Airlines.

The codeshare pact between the two Star Alliance members focuses on flights between and connecting through Ethiopian Airlines’ main hub at Addis Ababa International Airport (ADD) and United’s Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) hub. Ethiopian Airlines, which currently operates two nonstop flights between ADD and IAD daily, will gain access to United’s North American route map through the agreement made public on Wednesday. Ethiopian Airlines connects to 49 cities across Africa from its ADD hub.

In a joint statement announcing the codeshare alliance, Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Tewolde Gebremariam said, “This agreement will enable our two carriers to tap into new market opportunities and be competitive in the fast-growing Africa-U.S. travel market. It will also give a wider choice of connectivity options to our customers traveling between Africa and the U.S.”

United’s vice chairman and CRO, Jim Compton, said the pact “will offer United customers access to more destinations in Ethiopian’s extensive network.”

Ethiopian Airlines is the national airline of Ethiopia and is wholly owned by the Ethiopian government. Once the codeshare with United goes into effect, Ethiopian Airlines will have active codeshare agreements 21 carriers, including Air China, Air India, Lufthansa and Air Canada. The codeshare with United will be its first with a carrier in the United States.
