United Reduces U.K. Flights for Winter

United Airlines officials announced plans Tuesday to reduce its winter schedule to the United Kingdom from Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) by cutting the number of flights and using smaller-occupancy planes. This follows a broader trend from American carriers following the Brexit vote last month that damaged the value of the U.K.’s currency and curtailed demand for foreign travel. Executives of Delta Air Lines and United have each claimed that summer trans-Atlantic travel remains strong, but that the winter season would see drastically reduced business. “We’ve made some adjustments to our winter schedule, from Dulles to Manchester, and we’ve actually downgauged Dulles to Heathrow, in terms of getting capacity in line with demand,” said Jim Compton, chief revenue officer for United. “We do expect some impact from that.”
