TSA: We’re Confiscating More Weapons Than Ever

Over 90 firearms were discovered in carry-on luggage in week ending July 31.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) claims that flyers broke a major milestone in July twice – but not for passengers screened or checkpoint efficiency. On their blog, the security agency announced a new firearm discovery record set during the week ending on July 31, 2017.

According to the TSA, 96 firearms were discovered packed in carry-on luggage at security checkpoints across the United States. Of those, 85 were discovered loaded with live ammunition, with 26 chambered and ready to fire. The most guns were recovered at Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL), with 11 weapons found. Security workers at Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) discovered five guns, while TSA agents at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM), Denver International Airport (DEN), Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), Houston Hobby Airport (HOU), Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) all recovered three firearms each.

The previous record was set during the week ending July 16, 2017, when the TSA found 89 guns attempting to pass through security checkpoints. While firearms at the checkpoint are a major safety concern for passengers, TSA agents and law enforcement, carrying a gun can also have repercussions for the flyer. Those caught with a firearm at a checkpoint could be arrested and face fines up to $11,000.

“Firearm possession laws vary by state and locality,” the TSA cautions on their blog. “Travelers should familiarize themselves with state and local firearm laws for each point of travel prior to departure.”

Guns were not the only threatening and unusual items found at TSA checkpoints during the week; as depicted by the agency, inert grenades packed in shoes and ornamental daggers were also discovered in flyers’ carry-on items during the week.
