PIT Should Be Named After Mister Rogers, Petition Says

Pittsburgh resident Ian Miller started a petition last week on Change.org requesting that Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) be renamed to Fred Rogers International Airport in honor of Rogers’ lifelong impact in the Pittsburgh area.

“Fred Rogers, a television pioneer and children’s entertainer, shared Pittsburgh’s sense of community with the world through his PBS show,” the petition states.

“Pittsburgh is still an active transit hub and, for many people, our airport will be their first experience in Pittsburgh. We wish to welcome everybody to our neighborhood.”

Although it is unlikely that the airport will be renamed due to an extensive rebranding of the airport in 2016, PIT spokesperson Bob Kerlik admitted that “Fred Rogers occupies a special place in the hearts of Pittsburghers and people around the world.”

@UncleDude, It's probably safe to say they don't know who Charles Lindbergh is either, Fiorello LaGuardia, and a lot of other people who have airports named after them.

There's another alternative - name it after a famous favorite son who was also a war hero - Jimmy Stewart, pride of nearby Indiana, PA. Of course, just as there's Will Rogers Interplanetary Jetport in OKC, there's also a Stewart Field in New York. Oh, well. Back to the drawing board. So perhaps we'll have to settle for Bill Mazeroski - Franco Harris Intergalactic Universal Airport in Moon Township, PA.

UncleDude, I think you're thinking of Will Rodgers who indeed died in 1935. The article is about Fred Rogers who died much more recently in 2003. He was the star of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood and touched a huge portion of American kids' lives during his long TV career.

There's already a Major US Airport named after a Mr. Rogers and its a fair bet most of the US Population now have any idea who that Mr Rogers, who died over 80 years ago was.
