New Seattle Measure Aims to Protect Hotel Workers

A new Seattle measure, Seattle Initiative 124, would give new rights to hotel housekeepers and also require hotels to provide the workers with “panic buttons, track guests accused of harassment, and limit housekeeper workloads,” among other stipulations according to The Seattle Times.

“There’s a growing recognition that women working in isolation, especially immigrant women, are at incredible risk for sexual harassment and sexual assault,” said Abby Lawlor, spokeswoman for Seattle-based hospitality workers union Unite Here Local 8.

Those opposed to the measure say it is complicated, and Local 8 is aiming to make business difficult for hotels that aren’t unionized.
