In-Flight Entertainment Malfunction Grounds Flight

Cathay Pacific Flight CX379 was forced to turn back to Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) shortly after takeoff Tuesday due to a technical fault with the in-flight entertainment system’s cooling devices. None of the passengers of the flight from Hong Kong to Dusseldorf were injured by the malfunction, and a spokesperson for Cathay Pacific has reported that hotel accommodations have been made for guests inconvenienced by the delay, and that the airline is investigating the cause of the incident.

Since a malfunctioning IFE was the direct and sole cause of a Swissair MD-11 crash in Canada in 1997 (269 dead), it seems that turning back was a prudent thing to do. The Swissair captain, at the beginning of the incident, talked with the crew of a nearby BA flight which advised to return, but he decided to ignore it.
