Houston Debuts Bathroom Technology

Two airports in Houston have launched a tech-enhanced program to promote cleanliness of the bathrooms.

Passengers heading through Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) in Houston will now see a new piece of technology in use outside the bathrooms. The program, called Smart Restroom, works through touchscreen devices at restroom exits. Travelers will have the option to choose from a happy face or a sad face image to convey their experience using that particular bathroom. Touching the sad face will bring up a second screen that asks for more information – options to select include dirty stalls, no toilet paper, a wet floor, and more.

The program is also used to streamline bathroom operations. It tracks how many people are leaving the restroom and once that count hits a preset number, staff are alerted that the bathrooms need to be cleaned.

“Passengers have repeatedly told us through customer survey results that clean and modern restroom facilities rank at or near the top of their priority list,” Aviation Director Mario Diaz said in a release. “This pilot program is proof that we’re hearing that message and working hard to meet their expectations. By combining the hard work of our dedicated staff and this impressive technical tool, we’re confident that this pilot program will result in a greatly enhanced overall customer experience.”

The program is expected to be rolled out to every airport in the Houston Airport System over the next few months. Currently the touchscreens are only installed at gates D9 and A17 at Bush, and gates 29 and 30 at Hobby.

@IAHflyer182 EXACTLY. I won't even touch a bathroom door handle without a paper towel, I'm not about to start touching bathroom tablets. Best of luck, IAH.

New Technology? Hasn't DFW had these for years? And honestly every time I see them they make me think of everyone that doesn't wash there hands and then touch them, not exactly what I consider adding cleanliness.
