FAA Updates Rules for Commercial and Personal Drones

The Federal Aviation Administration’s guidelines for operating unmanned aircraft systems have just been updated with new rules effective as of August 2016 for commercial operators as well as drone hobbyists. The majority of updated regulations apply to commercial drone flights, and under the new guidelines, any drone being operated for commercial purposes must be flown by an operator with a “remote pilot certificate,” which can be obtained after passing a basic aptitude test at an FAA-approved testing center. The FAA has also introduced regulations regarding how high and at what hours drones can fly. For hobbyists, the new rules narrow down which aircraft meet the definition of “model aircraft” as distinct from drones, but both classifications still carry the same registration requirements as before the update.
