Approval Granted for First Drone to Fly Near Major Airport
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has now, for the first time, granted approval to allow a drone to operate at the busiest airport in the world – Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL). The specific airspace where the drone will fly falls under a special classification called “class B.” Prior to the decision, California-based 3D Robotics conducted seven test runs at ATL on Jan. 10.
The drone will be collecting “data on two four-story parking structures at the airport that a construction firm was hired to demolish,” according to Recode.
