Another Airline Has Debuted a New Premium Economy

Iberia announced this week that it will install a premium economy cabin with 37 seats on its long-haul flights, which will be offered to passengers starting next summer. Aside from offering extra legroom, the sections will be a separate class of service. The Spanish airline said that eight Airbus A330-300s will receive the seats, as well as 13 of its A340-600s. The remaining seats will go to 16 of its A350-900s, which the company says will be installed in 2018.

American Airlines has opted to add premium economy on a small portion of its fleet. It will be a different seat and a separate class of service. It also appears that upgrades from regular Y may be to premium Y instead of business (but it's not completely clear from what I have read).

Just flew "Premium Economy" on BA on a tired old 777 and it was awful. The old First Class seats from an MD-80 and entertainment equipment boxes under the seats in front of you, a TERRIBLE 7" video screen, NO POWERPOINTS, unless you count the old 1st generation D-shaped USB as an access, only 2 heads for 32 people plus half of Economy (people 3 and 4 deep in line most of the time on a 10 hour LHR-SFO flight), literally impossible to get out of your seat when the guy in front of you reclines, and lousy food. NEVER AGAIN flying BA, and I'm lifetime platinum on AA.

Just an addition to my previous comments. There is a huge difference in the seating space in true Premium Economy on the European carriers. Not only more legroom and seat pitch more a more comfortable seat.

I have to wonder when US carriers will follow suit. None of the legacy carriers offer true Premium Economy service. United's Economy Plus has more legroom and you're seated in the front of the economy class section. But that's it. Another fringe benefit was priority boarding but that's been eliminated. Paid for Economy Plus to Florida this month and expected priority boarding. No more. Because my seat was at the front of the 737 I was one of the last to board. Food? On a transatlantic flight it's the same economy class faire unlike British Airways which offers a choice of one business class meal option. What gives with the US carriers?

They should not be allowed. Only service dogs should be allowed on planes.
