Airlines Are Surprising Some Travelers With a $50 Charge at the Gate

Gate-service baggage fees have surprised so many passengers on Basic Economy flights that consumer advocates have spoken out about the “unusual and unreasonable” new restrictions and fees.

Although both United and American‘s sites state that passengers are only allowed one personal item (and no space in the overhead bin) often passengers, who have been flying for years with access to overhead bins on almost any flight, still don’t realize when they’ve purchased a flight where these restrictions apply.

Passengers who mistakenly bring roller carry-on bags to the gate are being charged $50 gate fees (the usual $25 checked bag fee plus a $25 penalty fee) — that must be paid immediately by credit card — to have their bags checked at the gate.

Ruamkz - No "bias" when mentioning only AA/UA and carryon bags. That's because Delta allows Basic Economy passengers to bring carryon bags that don't fit under the seat in front of them but do fit in the overhead bins. AA/UA do not.

Yes, the vast majority of these cases already know the rules, and they are trying to pull a "fast one" to weasel out of paying for any bags. In all fairness, Orbitz is perhaps the worst offender, as far as telling the customer. Seems like the "Basic Economy" always comes up as their first choice, and Orbitz seems to not emphasize the rules as much as other agencies or the carriers. And there is a bit of bias, when the media covers this......it's always about AA/UA.........the other part of the US3, Delta, never seems to get bad press about "Basic Economy" even though the have it.....and in fact, had it two years before the other two did.

Instead of just copying quotes out of someone else's article, you might do some fact checking first. UA does not restrict Basic Economy passengers from using overhead bins. They simply restrict the size to a bag that can fit under the seat in front of them.

So you didn't pay attention to all the warnings when buying the ticket and when you checked in and somehow think you should be exempt for not reading or are exempt from the rules and now want someone to bail you out...can I get this kind of bail out for my student loans?
